It’s a predictive search helper that provides suggested terms based on what you’ve typed in at that particular moment. For fun, I decided to compile a list of the first term suggested for each letter of the alphabet to form what I’m dubbing:

B is for Best Buy
C is for Craigslist
D is for Dictionary

G is for Google
H is for Hotmail

But why stop at the alphabet? Counting to twenty is much more amusing with Google Suggest:

I wonder is Google has a deal or something with some of these companies. I mean who has ever heard of Khols?
I bet it’s based on search volume. If you do a Google Trends breakdown of all the that are suggested for K (Kohls, K-mart and Kelly Blue Book, etc.) if look all the way to the right, you’ll see Kohls is actually on top, if you live in the US. “Kijiji” actually trumps all of them by a huge margin, but that’s only if you’re in Canada.
The only one that sort of surprised me was Utube. The actual Utube.com is a spammy squatter site. Google must use some sort of soundex algorithm to try figure out what people want too, because the first link that shows up for “utube” is YouTube.
