Eugene OR is home to a happy gum moth posted up on our front door. They're a good little pet. Can't eat and don't need much attention.

I live in Virginia City, Montana, and I found one of these beautiful moths out in front of my house. I have been watching it all day, and it continually is moving out of the sun, other than that it hasn't moved more than 10 inches, all day. Curious, I looked it up on the internet, and found the pic of and it looks identical, so they are also in Montana. Who can blame them?

Today in CT people were just taking pictures of my jeep which was so odd. So there it was hanging on to my window. It was beautiful, i ended driving 20 minutes to release it in the woods prevent it from getting ran over or caught for no reason. It is very similar to your pics but markings smaller. It made my day :)

Thanks for clearing this up and writing about it. We just moved to OR from MI, about a week ago, and this morning I found what I thought was an emporer gum moth on our window. It's really amazing. Thanks to your post, I now know what it is. Still amazing, just not science-journal-worthy.

Glad you like our "addebug.js" code. Good rule of thumb: nobody -ever- wants to deal with ad code. You can hide all kinds of fun stuff there.

And no, I'm not fired. Phew.

@Eric - the moth I found turned out not to be an Emperor Gum Moth. I wrote a follow up post about it here.

It was actually an Antheraea Polyphemus. They look very similar and are native to North America.

Sorry to spoil the mystery. Still a pretty moth though!
